How US visa appointment booking works in India
If you need a US visa interview, you normally book two appointments:
- OFC appointment — for your fingerprints and photograph.
- Consular interview — where you meet the visa officer.
The important part is that you normally book the OFC appointment first.
After you confirm your OFC appointment, the portal takes you to the interview booking step. You then have a limited amount of time to find and confirm an interview appointment.
If you don't complete the interview booking in time, you may have to start the process again.
That's the part many applicants don't know until they are already in the booking process.
The process in simple terms
1. Start your appointment booking
Log in to your US visa scheduling profile and choose the option to schedule an appointment. The portal will first take you to the OFC appointment calendar.
2. Choose your OFC appointment
Select the OFC location and date that work for you, then confirm the appointment. OFC is where your fingerprints and photograph are taken.
For many applicants, finding an OFC appointment is not the difficult part.
3. The interview booking screen opens
After your OFC appointment is confirmed, the portal moves you to the next calendar. This is the consular interview appointment.
The screen can look very similar to the OFC calendar, so it is easy to think you're still on the same step. You're not. You are now looking for the actual visa interview appointment.
4. Find and confirm the interview
Choose an available interview date and complete the booking. Once both appointments are successfully booked, you're done.
The important part: the time limit
There is a limited window after booking your OFC appointment to complete the interview booking.
Applicants commonly report a window of around 30 minutes, although the exact experience can vary.
For that reason, it's best to treat the OFC booking as the start of your interview-booking window.
There is one important difference
The time limit and the date gap between appointments are two completely different things.
For example, you might book your OFC appointment on 10 September and your interview might be available on 25 September. That's not a problem.
The portal can require a gap between the OFC and interview dates, and the interview may be much later simply because that is the earliest available interview appointment.
So don't confuse "How long do I have to book?" with "How many days apart are my appointments?" They are separate things.
Why applicants get stuck
The problem is usually not booking OFC. The problem is finding an interview appointment after OFC has been booked.
The process can look like this:
Book OFC → Interview calendar opens → No interview slots → Time runs out → Start again
And that's frustrating because you may have just found a perfectly good OFC appointment.
The interview calendar is often the harder part because interview capacity is more limited than OFC capacity. That's why an applicant can see plenty of OFC dates but very few interview dates.
What if there are no interview slots?
This is the situation that causes the most frustration. You book OFC, reach the interview calendar, and see no suitable appointment.
There may be nothing wrong with your application. It can simply mean that there isn't an interview appointment available for the location and dates you're looking for at that moment.
If your booking window expires without completing the interview appointment, you may need to start the process again. That is why timing matters.
Why does the portal work this way?
The two appointments serve different purposes. The OFC appointment is for collecting your biometrics. The consular appointment is the actual visa interview.
Because interview capacity is limited, the interview calendar can be much harder to get than the OFC calendar. This creates the frustrating situation where OFC is available but the interview isn't.
And if the interview isn't booked within the allowed window, you may have to repeat the process.
What should you do before booking OFC?
This is where a little preparation can save you a lot of frustration.
Know which locations you're willing to use
Decide your preferred interview locations before you start. If you're willing to use more than one city, know that in advance. Don't spend most of your booking window deciding where you want to go.
Check recent slot movement

If a page is still loading, give it a moment. During appointment booking, clicking repeatedly because a page appears stuck can sometimes create more problems than it solves.

Yes, an interview can be significantly later than your OFC appointment.
The time you have to book the interview is different from the number of days between your OFC date and interview date.
A large gap between the two appointments does not automatically mean something went wrong.
Does failing to complete the booking hurt my visa application?
A failed or expired appointment attempt is not the same thing as a visa refusal.
However, you should follow the portal's rules and avoid using unauthorized automation, extensions, or other tools that may violate the scheduling system's terms.
Can I book for my family together?
Family and group applications can have additional considerations. If you're booking for multiple applicants, make sure you understand how your group is configured in the scheduling profile before starting the appointment process.

It's better to keep the booking process simple.

How many times can I reschedule?
The number of permitted reschedules can depend on the rules shown in your account and the current scheduling system.
